THE SMITHS (1)
notes by P John Partington
Several different families amongst our forebears had the name ‘Smith’. These notes are about the ancestors and relations of Arthur George Smith (b. 1870), the father of Agnes Elaine (b. 1902) who married Robert Montague Bennett.
THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH (bef. 1793 - aft. 1829)
Our earliest known ancestor in this branch of the family is Thomas William Smith, who married Elizabeth Bellamy on 9 September 1810 in the parish of St Lawrence Pountney, London. They had a son, Arthur, born in Whitechapel in 1818/9. Thomas was a watchmaker at 47 Fenchurch Street, being listed in clock & watchmaker records between 1820-30. Elizabeth died in 1825, and on 4 September that same year Thomas married Octavia Ravenscroft at Christchurch, Greyfriars, Newgate. The following year he was listed in the London Gazette as being proceeded against for bankruptcy.
THE CHILDREN OF THOMAS WILLIAM (bef. 1793 - aft. 1829)
Thomas William’s son Arthur was born in Whitechapel in 1818/9 (according to a family Bible he was born on 24 May 1819, but IGI gives his baptism as 9 August 1818). He married Mary Anne Story and had two children: Arthur George born in 1870 and Annie (date unknown). Mary Anne died in 1884 and Arthur in 1905.
THE CHILDREN OF ARTHUR (c. 1818 - 1905)
Arthur’s first child, Arthur George, was born in 1870. In 1898, in London, he married Isabel Susanna Smith (no known relation), with whom he had a daughter, Agnes Elaine (known by her second name), born in 1902. Elaine married Robert Montague Bennett.
Arthur’s second child, Annie, married a Mr Legg, by whom she had four children: Ted, Kathleen, Marjorie and Anne.
