THE SMITHS (2)
notes by P John Partington
JOHN SMITH (1723 - 1809)
Our earliest known ancestor in this branch of the family is John, born in 1723. He married Mary Cook (the daughter of William and Ann) in 1752 and had a son, Robert, in about 1754. He died in 1809.
THE CHILDREN OF JOHN (1723 - 1809)
John’s son Robert was born in about 1754. He married Benedicta Ward in 1773 and had and had at least two children: Robert, born in 1776, and Thomas (details below). Robert died in 1827 and Benedicta in 1839.
THE CHILDREN OF ROBERT (1754 - 1827)
Robert’s son Robert was born in 1776. He married Ann Smith (no known relation, born in 1778, the daughter of Henry and Mary née Murkin) at St George’s, Hanover Square on 18 October 1801. Family memory has it that they then lived in a “large house in the New Road, Pentonville”. They had a son, William Robert, born in 1808 (details below). Robert died in 1830 and Ann in 1839.
Robert’s other son Thomas married Keziah Murkin, his sister-in-law Ann’s cousin, at Battersea Church. Thomas was apparently a successful solicitor, but nothing further is yet known of him.
THE CHILDREN OF ROBERT (1776 - 1830)
Robert’s son William Robert was born in 1808. He married Jane Poole (born in 1810, the daughter of John (b.1777) and Sarah née Coates) in 1829 and had a son, George Alfred, in 1832 (details below). Jane died in 1875 and William Robert in 1889.
