THE SMITHS (3)
notes by P John Partington
Several different families amongst our forebears carried the name ‘Smith’. These notes are about the Smiths of Mudge Down – Robert Montague Bennett’s two grandmothers (sisters Ann & Martha née Smith), their relations and ancestors.
Our earliest proven forebear in the Smith family is Thomas, born in about 1673 in Tytherington, Gloucestershire. (Thomas’ parentage is unproven, but he is very likely to have been the son of the John & Mary Smith who married in Tytherington in 1665– see Appendix below). On 24 April 1704, at Wickwar, he married Hannah Taylor – the register describes him as a “Husbandman of Tytherington”. The couple had seven children: Hannah born in 1704, Mary in 1706, Sarah in 1707, Martha in 1708, another Mary in 1713, John in 1715 and William in 1723 (see below). Thomas died, still in Tytherington, in 1741; Hannah’s date of death is unknown.
THE CHILDREN OF THOMAS (c. 1673 - 1741)
Thomas’ first child, Hannah, was born in Tytherington on 10 February 1703/4, and baptized there six days later. On 3 May 1742, still in Tytherington, she married William Pullen: the couple had two children – Betty, born in 1745, and James, born in 1746. William died on 14 March 1758; Hannah seems already to have been dead by then.
Thomas’ second child, Mary, was baptized in Tytherington on 7 May 1706; she died just two weeks later.
Thomas’ third child, Sarah, was baptized in Tytherington on 21 May 1707; his fourth, Martha, was born in Tytherington on 13 December 1708 and baptized there five days later; and his fifth, another Mary, was born there on 15 August 1713 and baptized there ten days later. Nothing further is known of them.
Thomas’ sixth child, John, was baptized in Tytherington on 18 October 1718. He married Elizabeth Dimmery on 10 April 1737, and had ten children: Hannah and Betty born in 1739, Mary and Sarah in 1742, Martha and John in 1746, another Mary in 1752, Ann in 1754, Thomas in 1757 and Martha in 1758 (details below). In addition the couple became guardians of John’s sister Hannah’s children Betty & James. John is mentioned in his brother-in-law William Pullen’s will, and was also involved in a marriage settlement with John Hawkins on the marriage of James Pullen & Elizabeth Hawkins. John died on 21 November 1780, “at Bishop’s Farm, Tytherington”, and Elizabeth died exactly two months later.
Thomas’ seventh child, William, was baptized in Tytherington on 4 January 1723. On 12 February 1745, still at Tytherington, he married Edith Pullen, with whom he had three children – Hannah, Mary & Martha.

THE CHILDREN OF JOHN (1775 - 1828)
John’s first child, John was born at Glen House, Iron Acton in 1802 and baptized at Rangeworthy on 23 May. He married twice: first, on 12 March 1831 at Rangeworthy, Ann Shipp, with whom he had at least two children: John in 1831/2 and Ann in 1834/5. Ann died in 1837, and on 15 May 1839 at Yate John married her cousin Susan(nah) Shipp, with whom he had a further three children: Thomas born in about 1840, Daniel in about 1841 and Moses in 1842/3. (Details of all the children are below.) The 1841 census records the family at Pool Farm, Iron Acton; ten years later they are at Wotton Wood in Iron Acton with children John, Ann, Daniel and Moses: John senior is described as a “farmer of 160 acres”. Twenty years later he and Susannah were living in Wotton Road, Iron Acton east, with John now described as a “farmer of 150 acres”. John died in 1880 at Wotton Road, Iron Acton; Susannah died the following year.
John’s second child, James, was baptized at Rangeworthy on 12 January 1805, and died in the June of that same year.
John’s third child, Thomas, was born in Rangeworthy in 1805, being baptized there on 22 December that year. He married Sarah Shipp, on 9 June 1836 at Yate: the couple had four children, all born in Iron Acton: John in 1837, Thomas in 1841/2, Sarah Ann in 1846/7 and Mary Shipp in 1848/9 (details below).. In 1841 the census recorded Tom and Sarah, with little John, at Mudge Down in Iron Acton; ten years later Tom is described as a “farmer of 200 acres, employing seven labourers” still at Mudge Down; in 1861 the family were still there, with Tom now described as a “proprietor manufacturer, employing five men and eight boys”; while in 1871 they were in Thornbury Road (probably still in fact at Mudge Down): Tom is a “farmer of 270 acres, employing ten men and two boys”: Sarah was with him, as was unmarried daughter Mary. Thomas died that same year, on 24 June, being buried in Holy Trinity churchyard. Ten years later Sarah was living at The Laurels Range, Rangeworthy; she died in 1888.John’s fourth child, George, was born in Rangeworthy, probably in 1808. He married Sarah Alway, with whom he had at least five children: John born in about 1835, George in about 1845, James in about 1848, Thomas in about 1851 and Henry in about 1854 (details below). In 1841 the census had recorded George, a “farmer”, and Sarah in Rangeworthy; forty years later they were living at Coombs End in Old Sodbury: George was now a “retired farmer”. He was still there when he died.
John’s fifth child, Martha, was born in Rangeworthy in 1811, and baptized there on 29 December that year. She was married twice: first to Philip White, by whom she had three children – Hannah born in Iron Acton in 1835, Jane born there in 1839 and Martha born there in 1843. (It was this Hannah who married John Smith below.) Philip presumably died in the following few years, for on 3 December 1853 Martha married Robert Shipp, by whom she had a daughter Alma, born in Iron Acton in 1855. In 1861 she and Robert were living in Nibley Lane, Iron Acton with Janice, Martha and Alma. Ten years later Robert, Martha and young Martha were living in Acton Street; Robert was a “farmer of 230 acres”. In 1871 Moses and Miranda were with their children at Yate Court Farm: Moses was a “farmer and auctioneer occupying 272 acres of land and employing seven men and three boys”. Ten years later Moses and Miranda were recorded with Frederick, Sidney, Annie and Elizabeth at Mudge Down Farm, Iron Acton, the four children still unmarried: Moses was a “farmer of 180 acres employing six men, one boy and a servant”. Miranda and Moses both died in 1896, the former being buried at Iron Acton on 28 May and the latter on 14 August.
John’s eighth child, Mary (known as ‘Minnie’) and his ninth, Hannah, were born at Rangeworthy in 1819 and 1821 respectively. They both died there in 1826.
John’s tenth child, Ann, was born on Christmas Day 1824. In 1841 she was recorded in Rangeworthy, “independent” and living with her mother and brother Moses.
