THE LOMAXES

THE EARLY GENERATIONS

The earliest known Lomax ancestor of ours was John, born in about 1750.  In 1772 he married Sarah (‘Sally’) Ormerod at Breightmet in Bolton;  the couple had eight children – George born in 1776, Ann in 1778,  Betty in 1780, John in 1786, Philip in 1789, Joseph in 1791, Jane in 1794, and Benjamin in 1799.  Sarah died in 1799 and John in 1807;  both were buried in Bolton.

 

THE CHILDREN OF JOHN LOMAX  (c.1750 - 1807)

John’s first child, George, was born in 1776.  He married Betty Tonge and had eight children – Joseph born in 1798, John in 1800, Richard in 1803, Thomas in 1805, Margaret in 1806, Sarah in 1808, and another Sara in 1809 (details below).

John’s second child, Ann, was born in 1778 and his third,  Betty in 1780.  Nothing further is yet known of them.

John’s  fourth child, John, was born in 1786 in Farnworth, near Bolton, and baptized in Deane on 29 April.  A ‘banksman’, on 12 October 1815 he married Betty Kay, in Deane; the couple had four children – Sarah born in 1816, Joseph in 1819, Benjamin in 1820 and Catherine in 1822  (details below).  In 1841 Betty (with John?) Was living in Bolton;  she died in 1843, being buried in Bolton on 22 September.  In 1851 John was living in Bolton.  He died in 1871, being buried in Deane on 26 September.

John’s fifth child, Philip, was born on 21 February 1789 in Deane, Lancs, and baptized there on 18 April.  Still in Deane, he married Ann Higham on 5 November 1820;  the couple had three children:  Sarah born in 1822, John in 1826 and Mary in 1832.  Philip died in Bolton in 1842, being buried on 7 October.  In 1851 & 1861 Ann was living in Bolton;  she died there in that latter year.

John’s sixth child, Joseph, was born in 1791.  He married Alice Watson and had four children –  Benjamin , Mary, Thomas and Jane.  Alice died in 1866 and Joseph in 1872, both in Bolton.

John’s seventh child, Jane, was baptized on 29 March 1794, in Deane, Lancs.  On 14 April 1819, still in Deane, she married Joseph Byers.  In 1841 the couple were living in Deane, and ten & twenty  years later in Farnworth.  Jane died there in 1871, being buried on 10 February;  Joseph died there in 1874, being buried on 26 April.

John’s eighth child, Benjamin, was born in Farnworth, near Bolton, on 16 February 1799, being baptized on 11 March.  On 1 January 1821 he married Jemima Seddon in Deane, Lancs.  The couple had nine children:  John born in 1821, William in 1822, Fanny in 1824, Alice Seddon in 1826, Frank in 1831, David in about 1834, Lot in 1835, Joseph in 1842, and Benjamin in 1845.  In 1841 Ben & Jemima were leaving in Deane, and by 1851 they had moved to Kearsley, where Jemima died in 1870 and Ben in 1874.

 

THE CHILDREN OF GEORGE  (1776 - aft. 1808)

George’s first child, Joseph, was born in 1798 and his second, John, in 1800.  Nothing further is yet known of them.

George’s third child, Richard, was born in 1803.  He married Susannah Heathcoate on 26 August 1821 at Leigh in Lancashire, and they had ten children:  John, born in 1822, Joseph in about 1824, Elizabeth in 1828, Thomas in about 1829, Sarah in 1832, Richard in about 1834, James in about 1835, Betty in about 1841, Hannah in about 1843, and Catherine in 1846 (details below).  They lived first at Deane, near Bolton, and moved in about 1829 to Farnworth.  The 1841 & 1851 censuses record them living there, at Highfield:  Richard was a coalminer.  In 1861 they were living at Middle Hulton, Richard still employed as a miner, and Susannah now a ‘housekeeper’.

George’s fourth child, Thomas, was born in 1805 and his fifth, Margaret, in 1806.  Nothing further is yet known of them.

George’s sixth child, Sarah, was born in 1808.  She died later that same year.

George’s seventh child, another Sara, was born in 1809;  nothing further is yet known of her.

 

THE CHILDREN OF RICHARD  (c. 1803 - aft. 1850)

Richard’s first child, John, was born in 1822, and baptized on 14 July that year at Deane by Bolton.  Nothing further is known at present.

Richard’s second child, Joseph, was born in 1824, and baptized on 20 May that year at Deane by Bolton.  The 1841 & 51 censuses record him as living with his parents and siblings at Highfield in Farnworth.  In 1861 he was living with his family at Middle Hulton.  In 1881 he was still unmarried, living with his brother Richard and family at 71 Fishergate in Preston:  the census describes him as a coalminer and gives his age, wrongly, as fifty-three.

Richard’s third child, Elizabeth, was born in 1828, and baptized on 3 August that year at Deane by Bolton.  The 1841 census records her living with the family at Highfield in Farnworth.

Richard’s fourth child, Thomas, was born in 1828/9, and baptized on 16 August 1829 at Farnworth with Kearsley.  Nothing further is known at present.

Richard’s fifth child, Sarah, was born in 1832, and baptized on 12 August that year at Farnworth with Kearsley.  The 1841 & 51 censuses record her as living with her parents and siblings at Highfield in Farnworth.

Richard’s sixth child, Richard, was born in 1834, and baptized on 21 September that year at Farnworth with Kearsley.  The 1841 & 51 censuses record him as living with his parents and siblings at Highfield in Farnworth.   In 1861 he was recorded as a ‘boarder’ at 23 Hawkshead Street, Preston, working as a “railway inspector”.  On 17 June that same year he married Nancy Reece, and they had four children, all born in Preston:  Sarah Ann in 1862, Alice in 1864, Ada in 1866 and Alfred James in 1871 (details below).  In 1871 the census records the family at 2 Butler Street, Preston:  Richard was working as a “railway carriage guard”.  Ten years later  the family were living at 71 Fishergate “North Western” in Preston:  Richard was a licensed victualler, and as well as his immediate family, his unmarried brothers James and Joseph were living with him.  Ten years later, Richard, now a widower, was a ‘publican’ at the Queen’s Hotel in Leyland.  He died in 1911.

Richard’s seventh child, James, was born in 1835/6.  The 1841 & 51 censuses record him as living with his parents and siblings at Highfield in Farnworth.   In 1881 he was living, unmarried, with his brother Richard and family at 71 Fishergate in Preston:  the census describes him as a mine servant.

Richard’s eighth & ninth children, Betty & Hannah, were born in 1841 and 1843 respectively.  The 1851 & 1861 censuses record them as living with their parents and various siblings at Highfield in Farnworth, and later in Middle Hulton, where they worked in a cotton mill.

Richard’s tenth child, Catherine, was born in Farnworth on 24 June 1846.  The 1851 census records her as living with her parents and six of her siblings at Highfield in Farnworth.  In 1861 she was living with her family in Middle Hulton, and working in a cotton mill.  In 1877 she married Thomas Partington, by whom she had four children:  Susannah born in 1877/8, John in 1879/80, Richard Lomax in 1882 and Thomas in 1887/8.  The 1881 census records the family at 19 Defence Street, Bolton:  Thomas is a “Police Officer”.  In 1891 they were at 29 Gibbon Street, and ten years later at 241 Deane Road, Bolton;  Thomas was now a “police sergeant”.  Catherine died on 10 January 1926, and on 19 March administration of her estate was granted to Thomas, then living at 134 Spa Road, Bolton and described as “formerly a police sergeant”.

 

THE CHILDREN OF RICHARD  (1834 - aft. 1880)

Richard’s first child, Sarah Ann, was born in Preston in 1862.  In 1871 she was with her family at 2 Butler Street, Preston, and ten years later at 71 Fishergate, working as a milliner.  In 1891 she was working with her father at the Queen’s Hotel in Leyland.

Richard’s second child, Alice, was born in Preston in 1864.  In 1871 she was at 2 Butler Street;  ten years later she was living with their family at 71 Fishergate, working as a domestic servant.  She married Henry Charles Hemfrey and had three children – Henry, Beatrice and Charles.

Richard’s third child, Ada, was born in Preston in 1866.  In 1871 she was at 2 Butler Street, Preston;  ten years later she was living with their family at 71 Fishergate, working as a domestic servant.  In 1888 she married Richard Smith, but by 1891 was widowed and living with her father and her two-year old daughter Lillian at the Queen’s Hotel in Leyland.

Richard’s fourth child, Alfred James, was born in Preston in 1871.  That year he was recorded at 2 Butler Street, Preston, and ten years later he was living with his family at 71 Fishergate, recorded as a ‘scholar’ (schoolboy).  In 1891 he was assisting his father, publican at the Queen’s Hotel in Leyland.  In 1900 he married Florence Ada Bowling, and by the following year had succeeded his father as publican at the Queen’s Hotel.  Alfred and Florence had at least four children –  daughters Florence Edna Reece, born in about 1901, Gladys Reece in about 1905, Dorothy Gertrude in about 1908, and Nancy R in 1913 (details below).  In 1911 the family were still at the Queen’s Hotel

THE CHILDREN OF ALFRED JAMES  (1871 - )

Alfred’s first child, Florence Edna Reece, was born in Leyland in about 1901.  Ten years later she was living with her family at the Queen’s Hotel.

Alfred’s second child, Gladys Reece, was born in about 1905, and his third, Dorothy Gertrude, in about 1908.  In 1911 they were living at the Queen’s Hotel, Leyland.

Alfred’s fourth daughter, Nancy R, was born in 1913.

 

THE CHILDREN OF JOHN  (1786 - aft. 1820)

John’s first child, Sarah, was born in 1816 and his second, Joseph, in 1819.  Nothing further is yet known of them.

John’s third child, Benjamin, was born in 1820.  He married Hannah Nightingale at Bolton le Moors, and moved with her to Preston, where he became station master.  They had nine children  – James born in 1846,  John in 1850, Edward in 1853, George in 1855, Henry in 1857, Jane in 1859, William Frederick in 1860, Joseph in 1862, and another Edward in 1864.

John’s fourth child, Catherine, was born in 1822.  Nothing further is yet known of her.
