THE DEWS

notes by P John Partington, revised October 2002

 RICHARD DEW (bef. 1799 - aft. 1840)

Our earliest known Dew ancestor is Richard, who married Keziah House (born c. 1793) on 26 December 1814. The couple had a daughter, Mary. In 1841 Richard is described as a "labourer". Nothing further is known for certain at present, though it seems likely that he is the fifty year old Richard Dew recorded in the 1841 census as living in Hinton, Northants, with twenty-five year old John Dew: Richard is an "agricultural labourer" and John a "bailiff"; both were born in the county.

THE CHILDREN OF RICHARD (bef. 1799 - aft. 1840)

Richard’s daughter Mary was born in Hinton, Northants, in 1821 and baptized in Woodford cum Membris on Christmas Day. On 29 October 1841 she married John Littlemore in Linslade Parish church; both she and he were illiterate. Her residence at the time was given as "Chelsea", a district of Linslade. The couple had eight children: Ann born in about 1846, Amelia Elizabeth in 1849, John William in about 1852, George Thomas in about 1854, John Richard in about 1856, Mary Dew in about 1858, Jane Ada in about 1861 and Emily H in about 1864. In 1849 the family were living at 69 Grove Street, Camden Terrace, and in 1881 John & Mary were living at 367 Kentish Town Road in London with their daughter Amelia Elizabeth and her family.
